High temps, strong winds blow in Osage County burn ban

Update: OCEM has rescinded the countywide burn ban as of 7:40 a.m. March 30, 2026, with notice the ban could be reinstated later today if fire danger conditions worsen.

Osage County Emergency Management has issued a countywide burn ban that is in effect today, March 26, 2026, due to high temperatures and gusty winds expected to cause very high fire danger.

National Weather Service at Topeka has forecast today’s weather in Osage County as sunny, with a high near 94, and breezy, with a south wind 20 to 25 mph and gusts as high as 35 mph.

NWS has also issued a hazardous weather outlook for east central Kansas and northeast Kansas with the area expected to  be in very high fire danger today into this evening. Despite forecast showers and thunderstorms likely before 4 a.m. Friday, clearing later in the day will lead to expected elevated fire danger through the weekend. Much of central and western Kansas is under a red flag warning today.

Very high fire danger means that fuels are extremely dry and any fires will start easily and spread rapidly.

Osage County’s burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated areas of the county and will be in effect until rescinded. For more information about the burn ban, contact Osage County Emergency Management at 785-828-3323 or the Osage County Sheriff’s Office at 785-828-3121.
