Outdoors: Fishing reports for Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake, Osage County Fishing Lake

The following fishing and lake reports for Osage County lakes were provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

MELVERN RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 10/15/2013

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Crappie Slow-fair 0.33-1.5 lbs. Anglers have been catching a few on jigs and minnows around brush piles.
Channel catfish Poor-fair 1-6 lbs. Stink bait, shad and nightcrawlers. Drifting shad over flats has been a good technique.
Black bass (smallmouth, largemouth and spotted) Fair 0.5-4 lbs. Using a variety of baits, including jigs, crawdad and shad imitation crankbaits along shoreline cover.
Boat ramp conditions All ramps in state park have sufficient depth for launching.
General Comments: Lake level was 2.66′ below normal, release, 20 cfs, and temperature, 68 degrees F, Oct. 15. Melvern Reservoir has Zebra Mussels – remember to clean, drain and dry your boat and fishing equipment when leaving the lake to keep from spreading them to other lakes.

POMONA RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 10/14/2013

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Channel catfish Good 2 – 7 pounds Use worms or dip baits and crappie entrails or cut shad, stink/prepared baits, The fish feeders are ON. anglers baiting areas with sour soybeans having good success, Lakewide or stilling basin.
Walleye Slow Varies The walleye population is improving, tryoff windy points, crank baits or jigs tipped with nightcrawler.
White bass/Wipers Good Varies Lakewide and the windy side of the points, wipers are following the schools of shad, minnows or shad colored lures, off the COE Swim beach.
Crappie Slow Most were 9 – 14 inches Lakewide, marina docks, over brushpiles, black and pink tube jigs, minnows.about 6 ft., most fish are over 10 inches, fish are slowly moving in.

Channel catfish Poor-fair 1-5 lbs. Using stink bait, shad, nightcrawlers, minnows and sunfish.
Bluegill Fair Up to 0.33 lbs. Using small spinners, jigs, and worms.
