Recreation update: OCPR schedules wrestling, youth basketball

Osage City Parks and Recreation has scheduled its fall and winter wrestling  and youth basketball programs as follows:

Youth Basketball (4-year-old and kindergarten)

This is an instructional basketball program designed to teach basketball fundamentals, shooting, dribbling, passing, and good sportsmanship through team practice and game play.

  • Kindergarten practice dates and location – Sundays – Jan. 12-Feb. 23 – 5-6 p.m. – Osage City Elementary School Gym.
  • Kindergarten basketball instructors – Kate and Lucas Boss.
  • Players receive a team shirt and participation award.
  • Cost is $20 per player.
  • Kindergarten signup deadline – Jan. 6.

Youth Basketball (1st and 2nd grade)

  • 1st/2nd grade practice dates, time, and location – Mon. or Wed. – 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. – Starting the week of Dec. 2 – Osage City Elementary School Gym.
  • Team games start the week of January 13.
  • Teams play 6 games – one game per week.
  • Games are played on Mon. or Wed. nights, 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m.
  • Players receive a team shirt and participation award.
  • Cost is $20 per player.
  • 1st/2nd grade signup deadline – Nov. 15.
  • OCPR coach-player discount available and OCPR scholarship forms available.
  • Both signup forms are available through Osage City Elementary School, at Osage City Hall or online at www.osagecity.com.

Youth Basketball (3rd-6th grade boys and girls)

  • OCPR teams participate in the Scott Brown Youth Basketball League.
  • League divisions are split into single grades 3rd-6th grade for boys and girls.
  • Team practice can begin the week of Dec. 2, if a team has a coach.
  • Practice days and times are set by the team’s head coach.
  • SBBL season, Saturdays, January 11-March 1.
  • –SBBL League Divisional Tournaments, March 8.
  • Players receive a team uniform and a participation award.
  • Cost is $30 per player.
  • Signup deadline, Nov. 8.
  • OCPR coach-player discount available and OCPR scholarship forms available.
  • Signup forms are available through Osage City Elementary School, at Osage City Hall or online, www.osagecity.com.

OC Youth Wrestling Club

Youth wrestlers must have turned 4 by August 31, 2013, and cannot turn 19 by August 31, 2014.

  • Practice location, OCPR Building, 517 S. First St.
  • Wrestling club head coach, Jamy Dumbar – this is Jamy’s sixth season as the OC Youth Wrestling Club head coach.
  • Practice dates and times: Novice practice – Tues./Thurs. – 5-6 p.m. – Nov. 4-March 3.
    Advanced practice – Tues./Thurs.- 6-7:30 p.m. – Nov. 4-March 3
  • Wrestling gear: Head gear and a team singlet for each wrestler is provided for their tournament. Practice clothes: Wrestlers need to wear comfortable clothes, T-shirt/sweatshirt, shorts/sweats, and wrestling shoes/socked feet on the mat.
  • Wrestling tournament schedule: The wrestling club participates in novice and open wrestling tournaments during January and February. Additional tournament information will be provided to the club by Jamy.
  • Club wrestler and parent meeting – November 4 – 6-7 p.m. – OC school cafeteria
  • –The meeting will cover – wrestlers signup – sportsmanship contract – OC Wrestling Club bylaws.
  • Program fee: Negotiable up to $50, this includes a Wrestling Club T-shirt and registration with USA Wrestling – All OC Wrestling Club wrestlers register with USA Wrestling and compete in the Kansas branch of USA Wrestling.
  • Make checks out to Osage City Wrestling Club.
  • Signup deadline – November 4.

OCPR 5th/6th Grade Football Results

October 12: Osage City, 16 – Burlington Blitz, 0

October 19: Osage City, 8 – Emporia FHO, 6

The Osage City 5th/6th grade Indians finished with an 8-3 record on the season (6-2 in ERC League play); placing 2nd in their division and 2nd overall in the ERC League out of 14 total teams.
