Lyndon to face No. 1 ranked Centralia in sub-state finals Friday

Coming home from Troy with their 11th win, the Lyndon High School Tigers might be facing their biggest challenge this season at home Friday against the Centralia Panthers, ranked No. 1 in 2A.

Lyndon’s running game dominated last week, although the Tigers defense held the Trojans to only one touchdown, for a final score of 37-8.

“This was a good win for our guys. Troy has a very good football team and I thought that we played our best overall game of the season tonight,” said Lyndon coach Rod Stallbaumer. “I was proud of the way our defense played; they came out with the kind of intensity you need to win at this time of year.”

The offense also played tough, with Josh Owens as lead rusher with 16 carries, 201 yards and two touchdowns.

“I thought we came out well after half and were able to put the game away,” Stallbaumer said. “We put together a nice drive on our first possession to score, then the defense came up big with a safety that gave us a lot of momentum. We were able to use that momentum to punch one more in to extend the lead.”

“It’s always tough to get a play-off victory on the road and I think our guys were motivated,” the coach said, noting that motivation will be needed against Centralia (11-0) in the sub-state finals this Friday (7 p.m.) at home.

“Centralia is one of the best teams in the state year in and year out. They return all 11 starters from last season’s state runner-up team,” Stallbaumer said. “They don’t make many mistakes, they don’t turn the ball over, they are extremely good defensively. We will have to take care of the football, be disciplined in our assignments and be extremely physical to win.”

“I think our guys are excited for the challenge,” he said.
