Outdoors: Fishing reports for Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake, Osage County Fishing Lake

The following fishing and lake reports for Osage County lakes were provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

MELVERN RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 11/21/2013

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Crappie Slow-Fair 1/3-1 pounds. Anglers did very well early in the week, but the action slowed after Tuesday. Anglers have been catching crappie mainly on red and white jigs around brush piles.
Black bass(Smallmouth, Largemouth, and Spotted) Fair 1/2-4 pounds. Using a variety of baits, including jigs, crawdad and shad imitation crank baits along shoreline cover.
Boat ramp conditions All ramps in Corps parks and state park have sufficient depth for launching.
Lake level was 2.12′ below normal, release = 20 cfs, and temperature = 52 F, Nov. 21.Melvern Reservoir has Zebra Mussels – Remember to clean, drain, and dry your boat and fishing equipment when leaving the lake to keep from spreading them to other lakes.

POMONA RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 11/21/2013

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Channel catfish Good 2 – 7 pounds. Use worms or dip baits and crappie entrails or cutshad, stink/prepared baits. The fish feeders are OFF. Lakewide or stilling basin.
Walleye Slow Varies. The walleye population is improving, try off windy points, crank baits or jigs tipped with nightcrawler
White bass/Wipers Good Varies. Lakewide and the windy side of the points, wipers are following the schools of shad, minnows or shad colored lures, off the Corps swim beach
Crappie Slow Most were 9 – 14 inches. Lakewide, marina docks, over brushpiles, black and pink tube jigs, minnows.about 6 ft on the winds side, most fish are over 10 inches, fish are slowly moving in.

Bluegill Fair Up to 1/3 pound. Using small spinners, jigs, and worms.
