LYNDON – Gary Jernigan, 75, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at a Topeka hospital. He was born on June 27, 1938, in Topeka, Kan., the only child of Orville and Pearle Jones Jernigan.
Gary grew up north of Dragoon Creek, north of Lyndon, had lived in Atlanta, Ga., and Topeka, and then returned to Lyndon.
He graduated from Osage City High School in 1956 and attended Emporia State University where he received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1960 and then a Master of Music degree in 1961. He taught at Brown High School in Atlanta, Ga., for five years, then at Highland Park Junior High School, Topeka, for 10 years. He also farmed with his father near Lyndon for many years. He had been a member of the United Methodist Church.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Orville on Nov. 11, 1988, and his mother Pearle on Oct. 14, 1989.
Gary is survived by several cousins and other family.
Funeral services for Gary will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at the Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon. Burial will be in the Arvonia Cemetery. Gary will lie in state from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
