Lyndon Pride plans community garden

Grow a garden!

Are you an advanced gardener? Never gardened before? Interested in gardening but never knew where to start? Live in an apartment or rental property and don’t have space for a garden? Now Lyndon Pride has a place for you at the Lyndon Community Garden.

Lyndon Pride, in partnership with the city of Lyndon, is forming a community garden just south of the Lyndon Community Center. The garden is open to all ages and all skill levels. There are two sizes of plots available, small and large. Space is limited so gardeners are urged to apply early to get a plot for the 2013 growing season. There is a fee for each plot – $20 for a small plot and $40 for a large plot.

Interested parties can fill out an application at Lyndon City Hall or participate in a work day scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon April 6 at the garden. Those interested in learning more about the garden are encouraged to attend. Weather permitting, there will be general clean up of the site and construction and layout of the garden as well as assignment of plots.

The community garden plans to hold a workshop the first Saturday of every month, when different skills will be demonstrated such as canning, composting, tree pruning, and other topics of interest of those who garden. The workshops will be taught by local experts.

Start up costs for the garden have been funded in part through a $3,750 grant from the K-State Research and Extension, Kansas Health Foundation, local business and club sponsorships and donations from citizens. Sponsorships have also been secured for those who may need assistance with fees associated with the garden, such as plot rental, seeds, plants and tools.

For more information about the garden and workshops, contact the city office at 785-828-3146, visit the city’s website, or follow the Lyndon Pride Community Garden on Facebook.
