Senior center plans for reopening; thrift sale items sought

The Osage County Senior Center is looking forward to reopening to the public, likely by June 1, 2020, if not before, center director Tammy Fager reports.

Reopening has begun with scheduling of some events, including a tentative date set for the center’s thrift sale on July 17.

The center is currently accepting donations of items for the sale, and staff is available at the center 8 a.m. to noon weekdays. For afternoon donations, contact the center and arrangements can be made to have someone available to accept the items.

The thrift sale will depend on whether enough donated items are received to hold a sale.

For more information, contact Fager at the senior center, 785-528-1170, or 604 Market St., Osage City, Kan.

Senior center closed; sewing group continues to sew masks

The Osage County Senior Center remains closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sewing Chicks are working on making cloth face masks. They are in need of 100 percent cotton and flannel material. Also needed is elastic; some are using thin hair bands. If anyone has some they would like to donate, call the senior center and leave a message. Messages are checked every day.

Commodities for 60 and over will be distributed Wednesday, April 15, at the senior center, provided they are received on time. Center staff will be calling those that are signed up. Staff will bring the commodities to vehicles so that no one will need to come into the center.

Please stay safe.

For more information, call 785-528-1170. The Osage County Senior Center is at 604 Market St., Osage City, Kan.

The Osage County Senior Center’s next fundraiser will be a pancake feed 7-10 a.m.  Saturday, March 7, 2020. Pancakes served until 10 a.m. or until they are gone.

Winners for the cupcake contest were Pam Noonan, best tasting, and Barb Janes, best decorated. Honorable mention went to Mary Treinen and Teresa Nell. Thank to everyone that made the cupcakes and helped with the contest. Special thanks to Colton Hultgren, Mariah O’Bryan, and Fred Diver for being our judges.

Larry Tindell submitted the winning guess for the amount of candy in the candy dish. Nadine Tindell won the Valentine’s Day lap quilt giveaway.

The center auctioned off the remaining cupcakes at the potluck dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 12. We had a lot of fun with it. The money made will be used for future potlucks.

Anyone that would like to help with quilting or does crocheting, knitting or needlepoint, is welcome to join the Sewing Chicks on Mondays. Quilting is Mondays and Wednesdays.

On Jan. 17, 2020, the Osage County Senior Center will have its January potluck lunch. It was decided to try a themed potluck and this month will be Mexican food. This doesn’t mean diners must bring a Mexican dish; all are invited and can bring anything they like.

On Jan. 31 will be another blood drive at the center, and Jan. 25 will be Quartermania for meals on wheels. More information on these events will be available soon.

Commodities are distributed at the center on the second Wednesday of every month. Participants must be at least 60 years old to qualify, with an income of $1,354 or less for one person or $1,832 or less for two people in the same household. Income verification and a one-month waiting period are required. Anyone in Osage County is eligible if they meet the above qualifications. For those with more people in the household, contact the center for help with determining if you qualify.

Anyone who is unable to come to Osage City to pick up commodities is asked to contact the center. We would like to know if there are people that qualify that can’t get here.

Osage County Senior Center: Decorating for the holidays

By Tammy Fager, Osage County Senior Center Director

Joan, with the help of volunteers, decorated the Osage County Senior Center for the Osage City Chamber’s Christmas on Market Street celebration and the upcoming community Thanksgiving meal.

On Dec. 3, a foot care company will be here to take any additional people that need toenails clipped or any other foot problems checked. You need to make an appointment for this. If we don’t have additional people sign up we will have to cancel this date.

Due to all the activities in November we will not be having a potluck this month, but will start again on Dec. 18. Meal service will be furnishing turkey with stuffing, ham and mashed potatoes, so we just need some additional trimmings and desserts. We hope to see you then.

Sewing Chicks want to remind everyone that they are still making chemo caps for cancer patients. If you know someone that needs one, contact the center. If anyone would like to buy one they are $5 each. If you would like to help make them you can contact the center for a pattern.

Along with quilts, afghans, pillows, they have aprons for men and women – all great Christmas presents. They also really some really nice walker bags made out of upholstery material, with more to come.

We want to make sure everyone knows that we give out commodities at the center on the second Wednesday of every month. Participants must be at least 60 years old to qualify with an income of $1,354 for one person or $1,832 for two persons in the same house or less. Income verification is required, as well as a one-month waiting period. The waiting period is due to ordering a month in advance. Anyone in Osage County is eligible and they meet the qualifications. You will be seeing signs around announcing the senior center is challenging all business in Osage County that want to participate, to see who can have the highest number of people donate blood in their business company name. I’ve also been asked to pass the challenge on to all the former Hallmark employees to donate. If you were a Hallmark employee just let us know, but you can also donate in the name of a current business.  The business that has the highest number of donors will get a traveling trophy – hoping that this is an annual event.

We will have an Osage County Senior Center potluck on Oct. 25. Anyone is welcome, just bring a covered dish. We have requested the attorney general’s office come and speak this day on the problem of telephone scams. I have not heard back from them but will keep everyone posted.

Senior center sets up market on Market Street

By Tammy Fager, Director

Last week was a very busy week with getting ready for the Osage County Community Resource and Health Fair, Saturday. We had a good turn out from the vendors and the public. A number of people won nice door prizes.

The Lions Club provided biscuits and gravy – it was delicious, as well as the chicken and noodle lunch the senior center served. All proceeds were donated to the Osage County Senior Center. A big thanks to Jan Ogleby, who fixed the chicken and noodles, Lois Butel, Mary Sexton, Judy Downey, Mary Treinen, and Warren Gunderman for all their work in the kitchen and serving, all the senior center participants who donated deserts, and anyone else that I may have left out.

This coming week we have our normal activities as well as the thrift sale, today, Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21. We have all kinds of items, from household, to clothes, toys and furniture and everything in between.

The Sewing Chicks, who meet at the center, not only sew and make lap quilts,  walker bags, tote bags, pillows and many other items, they donate and sell all of their items. The first of October a box will be placed out for donations for chemo caps for those in need. The chemo caps are all donated – for anyone that would be interested in helping make these, the group has yarn and patterns. If you or know of anyone that is in need of a cap, let the Chicks know. Anyone interested in making scarves? This would be great also.  Also, Threads Around the Table meet at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, for those who like to visit while they work. For anyone interested in helping, the Sewing Chicks are at the center 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. In addition to selling their items, group members also offer yarn for others’ projects in exchange for a small donation. The Sewing Chicks thank all of those that do come in and buy their items.

Osage County Senior Center: Activity, skills and fun featured at your center

By Tammy Fager, Senior Center Director

We would like to encourage any and all seniors to come to the Osage County Senior Center. We have daily activities and would like to hear from anyone about adding activities.

A typical week of activities at the senior center: On Mondays at 8 a.m. the “Crazy Sewing Ladies” welcome anyone interested in helping them with quilting or if someone would like to learn how to sew.

Exercise is at 11 a.m. Right now it’s with the TV, but if we could get some more interest or anyone interested in teaching an exercise class for seniors, some with limited abilities, that would be great. Cribbage is at 12:15 p.m. after lunch, then pitch and snacks at 5:30 p.m.

On Tuesdays, ceramics is at 9 a.m.; Mexican Train games and snacks at 12:30 p.m.

Wednesdays have about the same schedule as Mondays, with the Threads around the Table at 1 p.m. These ladies work on their own projects such as knitting, crocheting or needlepoint. If you would like to join in, or learn how to do one of these, please join them, they are great teachers.

Thursdays feature pool at 1 p.m. We are just starting this and are most definitely rusty. Come on down and join in the fun.

Friday is bingo day, 10-11:30 a.m. Bring a small gift bag no more than $5 and everyone wins. First winner picks a bag, then second and so on. At the end, the person with the most bingos wins a bag, and then last game is black out and they win a bag. It’s a lot of fun and crazy.

Stop in at 604 Market St. in Osage City, and have a cup of coffee or tea with us, we’d love to see you. For more information, call the center at 785-528-1170.

With winter set in, warmth available at the senior center

Well, the long dreary winter days are upon us. Sometimes it just feels like winter will never end. Even though we have been lucky with few icy or snowy days it can still be gray and lonely. All of us at the Osage County Senior Center would like you to know that we are open every day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and we almost always have a pot of coffee brewing.

If you are retired or just find yourself at home with nothing to do please come on in and get to know us! Maybe you have a few friends who are in the same predicament – think about grabbing them and bringing them in, too. We have nice tables and chairs that are always ready for a card game or dominoes – or just a nice spot to gather around and have a lively gab session.

Tax season is quickly coming upon us. AARP representatives will be at the senior center 8 a.m.-3 p.m. March 1, 2018. AARP service has been very popular service in the past, so take advantage of it this year. There are limited spaces available; call the center to set up an appointment at 785-528-4906.

New face at senior center grateful for local public transportation

By Dedi Mellies

Hello, I am Dedi Mellies – the new face at the Osage County Senior Center. I may look familiar to some of you because I worked at the Cotton O’Neil Clinic here in town as a nurse for 27 years. Last year I experienced a life changing medical condition that caused me to have to give up driving.

I have always been a very independent person – driving was something I just took for granted. You just don’t know how many times you just jump in the car to run to the store for little things – or people call and ask you to do them a favor and out the door you go to jump in the car. I was faced with the possibility of losing my job that I loved – both because of the financial security it provided but also because of the love of my coworkers and patients. That is when my supervisor, Vida Lewis RN, called me and told me about a service that she had discovered that would change my life yet again!

This awesome service is called Osage County General Transportation and they are based here in the Osage County Senior Center. I called them and told them of my dilemma and they jumped into action. Before I knew it they had made arrangements for me to be picked up every morning to get to work and every evening to get me home. I was flabbergasted that such a service was available and that I had never heard of it before. Then I thought I would never be able to afford it and that I was 61 years old so was not quite considered a senior citizen. Image my surprise when I found out that this service is funded in part by the Kansas Department of Transportation and the cost is only $3 per day if inside of Osage County and $5 per day if a trip outside of Osage County is necessary – and the service is available for any age group! Needless to say I signed up for the service and found everyone to be very accommodating and kind as they drove me back and forth every day.
