HIAWATHA, Kan. – Carolyn Mae Hall, 80, formerly of Quenemo, Kan., passed peacefully Aug. 15, 2026, following a brief stay at Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation, Hiawatha, Kan.
Though her time here has come to an end, the love she gave and the memories she created will continue to live on through the many people who were blessed to call her mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, sister, aunt, and friend.
Carolyn was born Aug. 13, 1946, in Scott City, Kan., to James Earl and Virginia (Salmons) Norton. She attended school in Garden City, Kan.
On May 22, 1962, Carolyn married Robert Calvert. Together they raised four daughters: Cindy, Ginny, Carolyn, and Roberta. The family made Hiawatha their home before Carolyn and Robert later divorced.
On Dec. 2, 1977, Carolyn married Jesse Lale Hall Sr. Through their marriage, Carolyn welcomed 13 stepchildren into her family, including two children Jesse had adopted. Her family grew to include sons, Jake, Terry, David, Lale, and Jesse Jr., and daughters, Wilmetta, Lyla, LaDonna, Susie, Ranae, Tammy, Sherry, and Linda. Carolyn and Jesse shared 41 years of marriage until his passing.
Carolyn had a special gift for making people feel cared for, and one of the ways she expressed that love was through food. She was a wonderful cook and took great pride in preparing meals for others. She perfected her cooking skills while working in the kitchens at the Tic Toc Café, Maple Leaf Restaurant, and the Hiawatha Inn, in Hiawatha.
In the 1990s, Jesse and Carolyn moved to Quenemo to be closer to family. It wasn’t long before Carolyn found her way back into a kitchen, this time cooking for the children at Quenemo Elementary School. Her love of cooking was more than a job – it was one of the ways she showed love and brought people together.
But perhaps Carolyn’s greatest joy was her family, especially the little ones. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and was often more than willing to volunteer to care for them. She treasured those moments and the laughter, stories, and memories that came with them.
Carolyn leaves behind a remarkable legacy of family: 53 grandchildren, 107 great-grandchildren, and 46 great-great-grandchildren. Her life touched generations, and the love she gave to her family will continue to be carried forward by each of them.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, James and Virginia Norton; her husband, Jesse L. Hall Sr.; sisters, Janice Beaudry and Maxine Hutchinson; brothers, Donny and Ed Norton; daughters, Cindy and Carolyn; and stepchildren, Jake, Terry, David, Lale, Jesse Jr., Wilmetta Argo, LaDonna Moore, Lyla McFeeters, Susie Clary, and Tammy Macon.
She is survived by her daughters, Ginny (Mark) Hopkins, Holton, Kan., and Roberta (Ray) Simpson, Topeka, Kan.; brother, Jerry (Peggy) Norton; sister, Linda Fares; stepdaughters, Ranae Spicer, Hiawatha, Linda (Alan) Mangold, Summerfield, and Sherry Rogers; and special son-in-law, Jimmy Trout, who lived with and cared for her.
Carolyn’s life was measured not only in years, but in the countless lives she touched. She nurtured people with her cooking, opened her heart to a large and blended family, and found special happiness in caring for the youngest members of the family. Her hands may no longer be in the kitchen, and her chair may now be empty, but the love she poured into every meal, every visit, and every family gathering will not be forgotten.
She leaves behind a family far too large to count in one room, but close enough to carry her memory in their hearts. Carolyn will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
Services will be at the Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon, Kan., Sunday, Aug. 23, with visitation 1-2 p.m. and service to immediately follow. Following services a meal and fellowship will be held at Garfield Shelter, 1600 NE Quincy St., Topeka, Ks 66608.
